Egypt has emerged as the frontrunner among four countries bidding to host the 2028 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to Ghanaian media reports.

The 2028 edition is expected to be the final tournament before the Confederation of African Football (CAF) implements its new decision to stage the AFCON every four years, a move approved by CAF’s executive committee in recent weeks.

According to Africa Soccer, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, and South Africa are all preparing to compete for the hosting rights.

The four nations are currently awaiting CAF’s official hosting requirements before submitting their formal bid documents.

Morocco is seeking to host the tournament in 2028 as part of its broader preparations ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.

Securing the AFCON would further strengthen Morocco’s position as a major football hub on the continent.

Egypt, however, is viewed as the leading candidate in the short term, given its extensive infrastructure, modern stadiums, and long-standing experience in organizing major continental and international sporting events.

The country last hosted the AFCON in 2019.

South Africa has not submitted a bid to host the tournament for several years, while Algeria is aiming to bring the competition back to its soil in an effort to replicate its success in 2019, when the national team lifted the AFCON trophy.

CAF is expected to announce further details regarding the bidding process in the coming months, as anticipation grows over the selection of the host nation for AFCON 2028.
