Former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge of AC Milan ahead of the 2026/27 season, according to reports in Italy.

The Rossoneri are searching for a new head coach following the departure of Massimiliano Allegri at the end of last season as the club begins a major restructuring process after missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification.

According to The Athletic, Amorim is currently the frontrunner for the position as Milan's hierarchy looks to rebuild both on and off the pitch.

The Portuguese coach is highly regarded for his work with Sporting CP and remains one of the most sought-after managers in European football despite his recent exit from Manchester United.

The report adds that Milan initially explored the possibility of appointing former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

However, those plans changed after Liverpool unexpectedly parted ways with Arne Slot and moved to appoint the Spanish coach.

Milan have also considered several other candidates during their search, including United States national team coach Mauricio Pochettino, former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, Al Ahli head coach Matthias Jaissle, and Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeneß.

In addition, the club reportedly held talks with Ralf Rangnick regarding a senior football leadership role that would sit above the head coach position as part of a broader overhaul of the club's sporting structure.

Milan finished fifth in Serie A last season, missing out on Champions League qualification for a second consecutive year, and the club's leadership views the upcoming managerial appointment as a crucial step in returning the seven-time European champions to the top level of European football.
