More than 6,000 civilians were killed in Myanmar in the first 20 months after the February 2021 military coup, AFP reported.

The findings were published Tuesday in a report by the Oslo Institute for Peace Research in Norway.

"Our data shows that the human toll in the conflict is higher than previously reported, and while the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) is clearly the main culprit, the anti-SCAF forces also have a lot of blood on their hands," said Sten Tennyson, one of the study's co-authors.

The report estimates the number of civilians who were killed for "political reasons" at 6,337, between February 1, 2021, and September 30, 2022, and the number of wounded during this period reached 2,614.

The army in Myanmar annulled the results of the legislative elections won by leader Aung San Suu Kyi's party and overthrew her government, alleging fraud.

Since then, the ruling military council has waged a massive crackdown, targeting all dissenting voices, and has arrested more than 23,000 people, according to a local monitoring group.
