Report: How Trump's COVID-19 Would Affect US Elections on Nov. 3?

Fri 02 Oct 2020 | 01:38 PM

Following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that he had tested positive for coronavirus on Friday, the White House cleared his schedule for several events.

The White House cancelled Trump’s trip to Florida to deliver a speech to his supporters

“The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch, and I appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions,” White House physician Sean P. Conley wrote in a memorandum released by the White House. “Rest assured I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, and I will keep you updated on any further developments.”

Trump's positive test means he will no longer be able to hold physical meetings or campaigns at a very crucial time ahead of the presidential election on November 3.

The second US presidential debate between the incumbent president and his rival Democratic candidate Joe Biden is set to take place on October 15, but with Trump’s announcement that he had tested positive for coronavirus, it is unclear if the debate will happen or not.

It is also expected that Biden will be tested for the coronavirus as he met Trump during the debate this week.

“Could Trump delay the US election?!”

According to the US law, The president does not have the power to delay or postpone a presidential election as the Congress is the one that has the authority to do that according to  Article II of the US constitution, which states that “Congress may determine the Time of chusing [sic] the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.”

The United States has never delayed a presidential election and only moved it for administrative reasons twice—both within the first 60 years of the country’s founding, The Sun reported.

No presidential election has ever been delayed, however, due to a national crisis - not even the Civil War or the Great Depression.

Noteworthy, Trump announced, on Friday, that he and his wife Melania have tested positive for the coronavirus.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!” Trump tweeted.

Trump said, on Thursday, that he and first lady Melania will enter quarantine as they are waiting for the results of the tests conducted for them after Hope Hicks, a top adviser and trusted aide, tested positive for the coronavirus.

Trump said on Twitter: “Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid-19.”

“Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!”

On the other hand, hours after the end of the presidential debate that sparked widespread controversy in the United States, Trump said that he had won the debate held between him and his rival Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

On Thursday morning, Donald Trump tweeted: “I won the debate big, based on compilation of polls etc. Thank you!”
