Real Sociedad were crowned champions of the Copa del Rey after defeating Atletico Madrid 4–3 on penalties, following a 2–2 draw after extra time in the final held on Saturday night at La Cartuja Stadium.
The Basque side made a dream start when Ander Barrenetxea scored in the opening minute.
Atletico Madrid responded through Ademola Lookman, who equalized in the 19th minute. Mikel Oyarzabal restored Sociedad’s lead just before halftime, sending them into the break 2–1 ahead.
In the second half, Atletico fought back once again, with Julian Alvarez scoring the equalizer in the 83rd minute to force extra time.
With neither side able to find a winner, the match went to penalties, where Real Sociedad held their nerve to secure the title.
The defeat ended Atletico Madrid’s hopes of claiming their 11th Copa del Rey trophy, while Real Sociedad lifted the cup for the fourth time in their history, and their first since the 2019–2020 season.
The Basque club reached the final after a challenging run, eliminating strong opponents including Osasuna, Alaves, and Athletic Bilbao on their way to the title.
