Real Madrid officially sacked head coach Xabi Alonso following the team’s defeat to Barcelona in the 2026 Spanish Super Cup final.

The decision was confirmed on Monday, just hours after Real Madrid lost 3–2 to their arch-rivals in an intense El Clásico clash held on Sunday evening.

In an official statement, the club said: “Real Madrid C.F. announce that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his tenure as head coach of the first team.”

The statement emphasized that the separation was amicable between both parties.

The club also praised Alonso’s legacy, adding: “Xabi Alonso will always be appreciated and loved by all Real Madrid fans as one of the club’s legends. He has always represented the values of Real Madrid, and the club will forever be his home.”

Real Madrid went on to thank Alonso and his coaching staff for their dedication and efforts during their time at the club, wishing them success in the next stage of their careers.

The decision to part ways with Alonso came amid growing frustration within the club following a decline in performances and results since the start of the season.

The Super Cup loss to Barcelona, decided by a 3–2 scoreline, proved to be the final blow, prompting swift action from the club’s management.

Xabi Alonso had taken charge of Real Madrid last summer, but inconsistent performances and unmet expectations accelerated the club’s decision to terminate his role.

Real Madrid are now expected to announce a new head coach in the coming days as they look to reset and compete strongly for the remainder of the season.
