The death toll in some of the Afghanistani provinces rose to at least 78 people and 32 citizens still missing on Saturday after several days of heavy rains triggered flash flooding that swamped farmlands and residential areas, according to Afghanistani authorities.

About 2,600 houses were partially or fully damaged in days of heavy rains that battered the war-ravaged country earlier this week.

According to an official statement by the disaster management ministry Tamim Azimi, the official confirmed: “We have so far found 78 dead bodies. Thirty-two people are still missing while another 30 are injured.”

In the same context, Azimi said rescue teams were in the affected provinces to locate the missing people even amid diminishing hopes to find them alive.

“We have sent heavy machinery to clean and open the closed roads and highways,” he said.

“Those who lost a family member are receiving 50,000 afghanis ($650) and the family of an injured 25,000 afghanis,” he announced.

Notably, the authorities of Afghanistan are currently relief to the affected families.

Also in this regard, nearly 5,000 acres of farmland got destroyed, and more than 3,600 livestock perished in the days of floods and rains, according to international reports.

The massive flooding has also damaged highways and roads, blocking key supply lines in some areas.

It's worth mentioning that Western Herat province is the worst affected, where 22 citizens have died in torrential rains.
