Several people were injured after a regional train collided with a car carrier in the Rhineland-Palatinate region, causing widespread debris and significant damage, authorities reported.
According to police, the car carrier became stuck at a level crossing in Ensheim, approximately 100 kilometers northeast of Stuttgart, amid slow-moving traffic as a fast regional train approached.
Despite the train driver’s use of emergency brakes, the train was unable to stop in time.
The driver of the car carrier managed to exit the vehicle but suffered serious injuries from flying debris.
The collision also caused a nearby car and the carrier itself to catch fire, with multiple explosions reported.
Three train passengers sustained minor injuries and were transported to hospital along with the driver.
Police have estimated the damages in the hundreds of thousands of euros. Officials will inspect the railway track before determining when the line can safely reopen.
The closure is expected to remain in effect for the near future.
