Morocco’s capital, Rabat, has been designated Arab Media Capital for 2026, a recognition officials say reflects the city’s growing cultural and media influence in the region.

In opening remarks delivered on his behalf, Youth, Culture and Communication Minister Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid said the selection by the Council of Arab Information Ministers underscores Rabat’s standing as a key hub in the Arab media and cultural landscape.

The speech, delivered by Abdelaziz El Boujdaini, secretary-general of the communication sector, noted that the designation adds to a series of recent international recognitions, including Rabat’s selection as World Book Capital for 2026.

Madi Al-Khamis, secretary-general of the Arab Media Forum, said the choice was “not incidental,” pointing to Morocco’s long-standing journalistic and intellectual tradition. He added that the country continues to produce highly trained media professionals through leading specialized institutions.

Officials said the recognition highlights Rabat’s historical and cultural heritage and its role in shaping the Arab media scene, alongside broader national efforts to strengthen the sector.
