In a move backed by Washington, Qatar has begun supplying natural gas to Syria through Jordan to address the country's severe energy crisis, according to three informed sources.

The Qatari initiative, described as a "temporary measure," aims to boost Syria's limited power generation capacity, starting with 400 megawatts and gradually increasing output. The project seeks to tackle the severe electricity shortage that has left the country struggling with an 80% power deficit.

Syria's electricity infrastructure has been severely damaged due to years of conflict, causing several power plants to go out of service. This has posed a major challenge to the country's efforts to revive its economy and rebuild critical infrastructure.

The gas supply deal is seen as a crucial step toward stabilizing Syria's energy sector and improving the quality of life for millions of people suffering from constant power outages.

US officials confirmed that the agreement was approved by Washington as part of efforts to ease the humanitarian crisis in Syria without violating international sanctions.

The initiative is expected to not only enhance electricity production but also support industrial activity and basic services in the war-torn nation.
