According to televised reports, French anti-riot police used tear gas during rallies against COVID-19 limitations and a vaccination campaign in central Paris on Saturday.

After protestors knocked over a police motorcycle ridden by two officers near the capital's Gare Saint-Lazare railway station, police attempted to push back demonstrators, according to television images.

Images revealed a large police presence on the streets of the city. The photographs showed scuffles between police and demonstrators on the Champs-Elysees promenade, where tear gas was sprayed and traffic was blocked.

Demonstrators opposing anti-coronavirus measures hoisted placards reading "Stop the dictatorship" at another rally organised by far-right lawmakers in west Paris.

Across France, protests were planned in cities including Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes and Toulouse.

On Saturday, 161,000 people demonstrated across France, up from 114,000 the week before, according to a French interior ministry official.

This weekend, French lawmakers will vote on a plan presented by the government to establish a health pass and mandate immunisation for health personnel.
