Prince Charming, the man of the dreams of many Disney princesses, is getting his very own feature film.
“Wonka” filmmaker Paul King, who also helmed the first two “Paddington” features, is directing “Prince Charming” for Disney.
King, Simon Barnaby and Jon Croker are co-writing the screenplay. It’s unclear if the film will be live action or animated.
In classic fairy tales, the Prince Charming character is one who rescues a damsel in distress and sets out to save her from evil forces/ stepmothers. See: “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Rapunzel” and basically any other 20th century (the time period, not the film studio) Disney movie.
In those films, however, he’s usually a side character and not the main star.
Though Prince Charming was originally the love interest of Cinderella, this project will not be specifically linked to the curfew-breaking princess, according to Deadline Hollywood, who reported the news of the “Prince Charming” movie and King’s involvement.
King, the 46-year-old British director, most recently steered “Wonka,” an origin story starring Timothee Chalamet as the famed, fictional chocolatier, to $218 million domestically and $634 million at the global box office.
The commercial success was a sweet surprise to Warner Bros. as well as theater owners, who reaped rewards from the “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” spinoff.
King also directed 2014’s beloved “Paddington” and the 2017 sequel, which earned a combined $615 million worldwide.
Though he’s not directing the forthcoming threequel, titled “Paddington in Peru,” he’s helped with the story for the latest adventure about everyone’s favorite marmalade-loving bear.
