The president of the Bulgarian Football Union Borislav Mikhailov has resigned after racist abuse aimed at England players during their clash at Euro 2020 qualifier in Sofia.
England's black footballers were subjected to racist abuse from Bulgaria's fans during England's 6-0 victory over the Lions on Monday.
Earlier, Bulgaria's prime minister Boyko Borissov demanded Mikhailov to quit after he strongly condemned the abuse on social media. BFU issued a statement, confirming his resign from his post.
"Today Bulgarian FA president Borislav Mihaylov has resigned from his position – his resignation letter will be presented to the members of the FA’s Executive Committee at this Friday’s gathering," the statement read.
"Mihaylov’s position comes following the pressure that has been generated over the last few days; the situation is not positive neither for Bulgarian football nor the Football Union itself," the statement added.
On his part, Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin strongly condemned the incident, saying, " The "football family and governments" need to "wage war on the racists," according to BBC.
European football's governing body Uefa opened an investigation on the incident, charging Bulgaria with the racist behavior. The Uefa president said that Uefa is trying to do its best to eradicate this disease from football.
"There were times, not long ago, when the football family thought that the scourge of racism was a distant memory," Ceferin said in a statement.
"The rise of nationalism across the continent has fueled some unacceptable behaviour and some have taken it upon themselves to think that a football crowd is the right place to give voice to their appalling views," the statement added.
