Portugal will visit Hungary tonight (Tuesday) at the Puskás Aréna in a crucial clash in the second round of the European qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Both teams are drawn in Group F alongside Ireland and Armenia. Portugal currently sit top of the group after their opening win, and Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates will look to hold onto first place with another positive result.
The reigning UEFA Nations League champions began their campaign in style, thrashing Armenia 5–0 to claim the early lead. Meanwhile, Hungary were held to a 2–2 draw with Ireland.
Ronaldo, who scored twice in the opening match, continues to chase more milestones. The Al Nassr forward extended his international tally to 140 goals, further strengthening his record as the highest scorer in the history of men’s international football. Across club and country, he has now reached 942 career goals, leaving him just 58 shy of the historic 1,000 mark.
The Portuguese captain is also just one goal away from equalling the all-time World Cup qualifying record, currently held by Guatemala’s Carlos Ruiz with 39 goals. He could match or even surpass that record against Hungary tonight.
Ronaldo has now scored in four consecutive games for Portugal, finding the net against Denmark, Germany, and Spain in the Nations League, before continuing his streak with a brace versus Armenia. He will be aiming to extend that run in Budapest against Hungary.
