The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has officially announced the departure of head coach Roberto Martinez, bringing his three-and-a-half-year tenure with the national team to an end following Portugal's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the federation confirmed that Martinez and his coaching staff had left their positions, thanking them for their professionalism and dedication throughout their time in charge.

The FPF highlighted Martinez's achievements, including leading Portugal to the 2025 UEFA Nations League title, while praising his commitment to the federation's long-term sporting project.

"We thank Roberto Martinez and his coaching staff for their professionalism and dedication over the past three and a half years, a period that included winning the 2025 Nations League, as well as the commitment and respect they consistently showed toward the country and Portuguese football," the federation said.

FPF president Pedro Proença also confirmed that the search for a new head coach is already underway, stressing that the federation's objective is to preserve the winning mentality and ambition that should define the Portuguese national team in every competition.

Martinez's departure comes days after Portugal suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending the team's hopes of lifting the trophy.
