Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk has accused the previous administration led by the Law and Justice Party (PiS) of embezzling billions of dollars during their eight years in power.
Speaking in Warsaw, Tusk revealed that financial inspectors are currently auditing the accounts of 90 government institutions.
Tusk stated that the PiS government, which held power from 2015 to 2023, illegally spent an estimated $25 billion of public funds.
The nationalist-conservative Law and Justice Party, known for its confrontational stance with the European Union, was defeated in the parliamentary elections held in October. Since December, a center-left coalition led by Tusk has governed Poland.
Tusk disclosed that 62 individuals are currently under investigation, and 149 complaints have been filed with the prosecutor's office.
He further alleged that there was a deliberate strategy to exploit public funds, which were funneled from ministries to institutions managed by politicians or their family members.
These funds were reportedly used creatively to support political propaganda during election campaigns.
Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, in a post on the social media platform X, dismissed these allegations as lies aimed at "destroying the largest opposition party in Poland."
