Sony's PlayStation Network (PSN) suffered a major global outage that lasted for 24 hours, affecting millions of gamers around the world and preventing them from accessing online gaming services and applications, according to CNN.

The problems began on Friday evening, according to PlayStation's service status site, disrupting account management, online gaming, the PlayStation Store, and live streaming services.

Sony did not issue an official statement explaining the cause of the outage.

At midnight on Sunday, PlayStation announced via its official account on the X platform that the service was fully operational, saying, "Service has been restored, you can now access online features without any problems," adding an apology to users for the inconvenience without providing any further details on the cause of the outage.

During the outage, the "Down Detector" website saw a sharp increase in user reports of problems with the service, peaking at midnight GMT on Saturday, before reports began to gradually decrease.

Players expressed their anger and frustration on social media, with one user on the X platform describing the outage on Friday night as “unacceptable,” while another took the situation in a humorous way, saying he took the opportunity to get to know his wife of five years.

The outage affected several popular games, including Fortnite and Call of Duty, prompting the games’ support teams to contact PlayStation.

The support team for Marvel Rivals, which was released in December 2024, said that users “may have difficulty accessing games, applications, or online features,” and that they were “in constant communication with the PlayStation team.”

Despite the service being restored, some users reported that intermittent issues continued in some games, with Fortnite’s support team reporting that players were able to log in and play, but some services were not yet fully operational.

The outage is one of the longest ever for the PlayStation Network, but it's nothing compared to the 2011 disaster when a security breach shut down the service for nearly a month.

PlayStation Network has an estimated 116 million monthly users, according to Sony data from last September.
