A deadly shooting near a migrant camp in northern France has left one person dead and two others seriously injured, according to police sources on Sunday.

The incident occurred close to the Loon-Plage camp near Dunkirk, a location that has seen a rise in violence in recent days.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims. The shooting comes just a day after another deadly incident near the same camp, which houses over 1,500 migrants, mostly hoping to reach the UK by crossing the English Channel.

On Saturday, a 24-year-old Sudanese man was killed and five others were injured, including a child. Police reported that all victims in that incident were Sudanese nationals.

Two suspects were arrested in connection with Saturday’s shooting — a 29-year-old Iraqi man and a 16-year-old Afghan boy.

The northern French coastline has long been a gathering point for migrants attempting the perilous Channel crossing.

According to UK authorities, 919 migrants crossed on Friday alone aboard 14 small boats. Since the beginning of the year, at least 15 people have died in the Channel while trying to reach Britain.

French officials also reported that 78 migrants have lost their lives in 2024 attempting sea crossings to the UK — the highest toll since such attempts began intensifying in 2018. Last year, more than 36,800 migrants made the journey, marking a 25% rise compared to 2023.
