Egyptian international Omar Marmoush led Manchester City to the FA Cup quarterfinals after scoring twice in a 3–1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday in the fifth round of the competition.
Newcastle took the lead early through Harvey Barnes in the 18th minute, but City responded before halftime when Savinho equalized in the 39th minute to make it 1–1 at the break.
Marmoush stole the spotlight in the second half, putting City ahead just two minutes after the restart.
The Egyptian forward converted a cross in the 47th minute, finishing clinically to give the visitors a 2–1 lead.
He struck again in the 65th minute after receiving the ball at the edge of the penalty area and firing a powerful shot into the net to seal the victory for City.
Marmoush later left the pitch in the 73rd minute and was replaced by Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo.
The win continues Manchester City’s strong run against Newcastle this season.
The Magpies had previously secured a surprise 2–1 victory at St James’ Park in the Premier League on November 27, but City responded with a 2–0 win in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal on January 13.
Pep Guardiola’s side followed that with a 3–1 victory in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on February 4, before beating Newcastle again 2–0 in the league on February 21.
With this latest triumph, Manchester City advance to the FA Cup quarterfinals, with Marmoush continuing to play a decisive role in the club’s domestic campaign.
