The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) condemned in the strongest terms the vote by the Knesset of Israel, the occupying power, on an invalid bill that prohibits the role of UNRWA in occupied East Jerusalem and cancels the privileges and immunities granted to it under the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly, considering this as part of its attempts to liquidate the issue of Palestinian refugees and their inherent right to return, in flagrant violation of international law, the Charter of the United Nations and its relevant resolutions.
The OIC warned of the repercussions of these Israeli measures on the role of UNRWA in providing basic services to Palestinian refugees, stressing that the continued targeting of the agency’s facilities, employees, and thousands of displaced persons in its schools by the Israeli occupation will not change the legal status of UNRWA which enjoys an international mandate based on the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly.
The OIC equally called on the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to assume its responsibilities towards protecting UNRWA and its vital role in providing basic services to millions of Palestinian refugees and ensuring their rights until a just and agreed-upon solution is achieved in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions.
