The Muslim world commemorates Muslim Orphan’s Day each year on the 15th of Ramadan.

This day was established following a resolution adopted by the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) during its 40th session held in Conakry, Republic of Guinea, in December 2013.

The purpose of this occasion is to raise awareness about the issues and needs of orphans.

On this occasion, the OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to support comprehensive care and sponsorship for orphans. He called for increased efforts to protect and provide for them, particularly in disaster-stricken and conflict-, climate change affected areas, where displacement and refugee crises have left many children vulnerable.

The Secretary-General stressed that the OIC will continue its commitment to stand in solidarity with millions of orphaned and vulnerable children, advocating for their rights, better support systems, such as orphanages, foster care systems, adoption services, healthcare, and education, making it critical for governments, societies, and institutions to step forward with sustainable solutions.

Islam has strongly emphasized, through the Qur’an and the Sunnah, the importance of treating orphans with kindness, ensuring their care, education, healthcare, and social well-being, safeguarding their rights, and providing them with a proper upbringing.
