Bayer Leverkusen announced on Monday that Dutch manager Erik ten Hag, 55, has been dismissed only three matches into the new Bundesliga season.

Leverkusen began the campaign with a 2–1 defeat to Hoffenheim before drawing 3–3 with Werder Bremen at the weekend, despite holding a 3–1 lead.

The poor start prompted the club’s board to act quickly, making a decision rarely seen in Germany when it comes to newly appointed managers.

According to Bild, Ten Hag’s tenure became untenable due to repeated mistakes during his two months in charge, despite signing a contract that was set to run until 2027. The report described his appointment as “ill-considered from the beginning,” noting he was not the first or even second choice to succeed Xabi Alonso, who left for Real Madrid earlier this summer.

Assistant coach Roger Maier will take charge on an interim basis as Leverkusen prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
