World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on October 5th. The day aims to honor teachers around the globe and it celebrates their contribution to shaping the future of their pupils.

According to UNESCO, universal basic education will require an additional 69 million teachers by 2030. Unfortunately, the current trend is indicating that there will be a further shortage of teachers as many are leaving the profession.

Education International and its partners have conducted new research to identify the primary reasons for this trend and have proposed potential solutions to reverse it.

In 2023, Education International, UNESCO, the International Labour Organization, and UNICEF will organize World Teachers' Day under the theme "The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage." This event aims to draw attention to the global teacher shortage.

In a statement, David Edwards, Education International General Secretary, said: “Today, teachers are overworked, undervalued, and underpaid, and more and more are forced to leave the profession they love and the world needs. At the same time, fewer young people aspire to be teachers.”

“It’s easy to see why. Working conditions have deteriorated, pay has not kept up with inflation, workloads have skyrocketed, and professional autonomy has been steadily replaced with never-ending controls and bureaucracy. Urgent action is imperative because the right to quality education is at stake,” he noted.
