Norway: 3 French Skiers Killed in Avalanche

An avalanche in northern Norway killed three French members of a skiing group, police confirmed on Thursday, adding that another six members were unhurt.

Norwegian broadcaster NRK said the three victims were immediately found as they wore avalanche detectors and were declared dead on the spot.

"The three victims are French," police chief Karl Erik Thomassen told AFP.

The avalanche took place near the Kavringtinden mountain, east of the city of Tromsoe, from where air ambulances were sent to the scene. The area is north of the Arctic Circle.

Last November, a search team found the bodies of three french climbers who were missing for two weeks in a remote corner of Nepal’s Himalayas.

The group was trying to scale Mingbo Eiger, a 6,000-metre (19,700-feet) peak near Mount Everest, and were last heard from via satellite phone from their camp on October 26. The bad weather hampered efforts to find the men.

Police inspector Rishi Raj Dhakal told AFP that three bodies had been found in the search area by local mountain guides but they could not confirm their identities this early.
