The Nigeria Center for Infectious Diseases Control stated that the country recorded a 500% increase in the number of corona infections in the past days due to the Delta and Omicron mutant.

As of December 19, a total of 223,887 cases and a total of 2,985 deaths have been recorded, said the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The center launched a campaign for the Christmas season under the title (Celebrating Responsibly), which focuses on the measures that Nigerians should take to protect themselves and their loved ones from Corona during the festive period, declaring that the country is now in the fourth wave of the pandemic.

On his part, Nigeria's Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Ogbonaya Ono, promised that his country would soon discover a local treatment for the dreaded virus.

The minister expressed his regret over the disparities in the vaccination rate of the rich and the poor in the country, especially since the virus cannot be easily overcome around the world.

The health impacts of COVID-19 have not spared Nigeria. The country recorded its first case of COVID-19 on February 27, 2020, and has subsequently suffered three distinct waves of infection, peaking in June 2020, January 2021, and August 2021.

Health and safety measures – including inter-state and international travel bans, restrictions on mass gatherings, and school closures – have waxed and waned with case numbers, as the federal government has sought to contain the spread of the virus.

Nevertheless, many of the primary effects of the COVID-19 crisis on Nigeria have been economic, rather than health-related.

The early part of the COVID-19 crisis ushered in Nigeria’s deepest recession since the 1980s, with services and industry hit especially hard.
