Brazilian giants Santos have officially announced the dismissal of head coach Kleber Xavier, just hours after the team suffered a humiliating 6-0 home defeat to Vasco da Gama on Sunday in the Brazilian league.
In a statement released on social media, the club said: “Santos Football Club announces the departure of coach Kleber Xavier. The club thanks him for his services and wishes him success in his future career.”
The heavy loss has left Santos dangerously close to the relegation zone, sitting 15th in the table with 21 points from 19 matches.
Star forward Neymar da Silva, who was visibly emotional and broke down in tears after the final whistle, voiced his frustration in post-match comments: “You have to explain our approach on the pitch, which was, simply put, very poor. It’s disappointing to play this way wearing the Santos shirt. Everyone needs to go home, rest, and think carefully about what they want to do.”
The club had recently renewed Neymar’s contract until the end of 2025. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star rejoined Santos in late January after an 18-month spell with Saudi side Al-Hilal, returning to the team where he started his professional career.
