Brazilian star Neymar sent a clear message of support to compatriot Vinícius Júnior after scoring twice in Santos FC’s 2-1 victory over CR Vasco da Gama in the fourth round of the Brazilian league early Friday.
Neymar found the net in the 25th and 61st minutes, securing an important win for Santos. However, it was his post-goal celebration that stole the spotlight. Near the corner flag, Neymar replicated Vinícius’ signature dance, a gesture widely interpreted as a show of solidarity.
Explaining the celebration, Neymar said: "I told Vinícius when he scored in Portugal and faced insults and racism: when you score, celebrate however you want. And if I score, I’ll celebrate the same way."
Vinícius recently sparked debate during UEFA Champions League playoff clashes against SL Benfica, where he celebrated with a dance near the corner flag in both legs.
Some Benfica supporters viewed the act as provocative, particularly after he received a warning in the first match.
Despite the controversy, Vinícius continues to shine in Europe this season. He has recorded three goals and six assists in 10 Champions League appearances, raising his total goal contributions for Real Madrid in the competition to 59 (32 goals and 27 assists).
Neymar’s gesture underscores growing solidarity among Brazilian players in the face of racial abuse, reinforcing the message that joy and self-expression remain central to the game.
