Brazilian veteran Neymar da Silva, forward for Santos FC, has hinted that he could retire from professional football at the end of 2026, as he sets his sights on representing Brazil in the upcoming World Cup.
The 34-year-old star has made just one appearance for Santos this season, playing 45 minutes and providing an assist. Despite limited action, Neymar stressed that the current year is crucial both for his club and the national team.
“This year is very important, not only for Santos but also for Brazil. There is a World Cup, and it is a big challenge for me,” Neymar said in comments reported by Turkish outlet Fanatik. “I wanted to participate at full capacity, which is why I missed some matches this season.”
The Brazilian forward also responded to criticism regarding his fitness and commitment. “Some people judge me without knowing my daily life. I returned from my last match in great condition, and I will continue to improve my level,” he said.
Addressing speculation about his future, Neymar added, “I may think about retiring in December 2026, but the decision must be honest and come from the heart. I’m taking it day by day.”
Having recently celebrated his 34th birthday, Neymar appears to be considering ending his career earlier than other football icons such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have continued playing into their late 30s.
