Police in Tokyo arrested a 23-year-old citizen from New Zealand for attacking a guard in the imperial palace, RIA Novosti reported.
The young man was walking in the Eastern Gardens at the Imperial Palace and tried to get into a zone closed to outsiders.
When a police guard officer asked the New Zealander where he was heading, the latter pushed him hard and knocked him down. The police officer received injuries that will take a week to heal.
Meanwhile, Tokyo’s police are investigating the cause of the incident.
The Tokyo Imperial Palace was built on the site of the old Edo Castle, spanning 1.15 square kilometers. It has a large park-like area in the Chiyoda district of the Chiyoda ward of Tokyo and contains various buildings, including the Fukiage Palace where the Emperor has his living quarters.
The historical site in Tokyo has been officially used as a residence of Japan’s Imperial family since 1869.
