Universal Pictures and Peacock, in partnership with Blumhouse and Morgan Creek, have closed an agreement of more than a $400 million-plus deal to purchase worldwide rights for a new "Exorcist" franchise.

Ellen Burstyn is set to reprise her role as Chris MacNeil, the mother of a demon-possessed child.

Leslie Odom Jr. will also star as the father of a possessed child who seeks out MacNeil's aid.

David Gordon Green will direct the first of three planned movies, which is set to be released theatrically on Oct. 13, 2023.

The franchise is described as a continuation to the original 1973 movie, rather than a remake,  which was directed by William Friedkin and adapted by William Peter Blatty based on his novel.

"The Exorcist" became a sensation following its release and has since grossed over $441 million, making it the highest domestic grossing horror movie over a 48-year-long run.

The movie centered around a 12-year-old girl possessed by a mysterious entity and the lengths her mother and two Catholic priests go to in an attempt to save her.
