Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed readiness to temporarily halt military operations in Gaza to facilitate the release of hostages held by Hamas, according to reports in the Israeli media.

Netanyahu's statement comes amid mounting international pressure and worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza, though he dismissed reports from international organizations describing the situation as famine-stricken, calling them “false.” He reaffirmed that military operations against Hamas will continue.

The conflict, which has dragged on since October 2023, has led to the deaths of over 53,000 people, including large numbers of children, according to various reports — sparking public outrage across Europe and growing diplomatic isolation for Israel.

European Union governments are increasingly re-evaluating their relations with Israel. From France and Spain to the Netherlands, several member states have voiced their concerns. According to El País, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that the EU-Israel Association Agreement, in place since 2000, will undergo a review in response to the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

This review requires unanimous support from EU member states. Reports indicate that at least 17 countries support the measure, though opposition from countries such as Germany, Italy, and Hungary may slow its progress, as they advocate maintaining dialogue channels with Israel.

Israel’s growing diplomatic isolation, paired with increased scrutiny from Western allies, adds pressure on the Netanyahu government to navigate both the military and humanitarian dimensions of the conflict more cautiously.
