Countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO) have agreed to supply Ukraine with new types of heavy weapons, as Kyiv expects a Russian attack in the east of the country, representatives of the alliance told the British Financial Times.

NATO's pledge comes after Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on Western countries to speed up supplying his country with weapons or risk seeing "a lot of people die because of the aid arriving too late," he said.

Six weeks after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces withdrew significantly from northern Kyiv after failing to capture the Ukrainian capital.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba said he would use the NATO meeting in Brussels to order planes, missiles, armored vehicles, and heavy air defense systems, among other things.

For her part, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss told reporters that member states "supported the supply of more weapons to Ukraine."
