At Al-Azhar Headquarters, HE Dr. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar received Dr. Nasardin Umar, Chancellor of the Higher Institute of Al-Qur'an Studies and Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, in the presence of Mr. Lutfi Rauf, the Indonesian Ambassador to Cairo. The meeting aimed to discuss ways to enhance Al-Azhar’s Da‘wah (advocacy) support to the imams and preachers in Indonesia.
The Grand Imam averred that Al-Azhar is proud of its historical relations with the Indonesian people, noting that international students at Al-Azhar constitute a significant pillar. He also pointed out that the Indonesian students at Al-Azhar are distinguished by their probity and virtuosity, and by their keenness to acquire knowledge. He further asserted that he follows up on the contributions of Indonesian students and their successes at the various educational levels in Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif.
The Grand Imam added that Al-Azhar seeks to support the Muslim peoples through training imams and preachers from different world countries at the Al-Azhar International Academy for the Training of Imams and Preachers, and to equip them with the necessary skills to debunk the arguments of extremist groups and to address contemporary developments. He then noted that the academy also assigns specialized programs that suit the needs of each country and the nature of its respective obstacles and challenges. These programs, the Grand Imam maintained, are prepared by a group of senior Azhari scholars and academes.
Imam At-Tayyeb further illustrated that the Muslim preacher should be versed in religious sciences and should exert all possible efforts in seeking knowledge, or else they would fail to stand firm in face of changes or even go astray. He then confirmed that Al-Azhar is making great efforts towards shaping the personality of the imams and the preachers in line with their noblest mission of conveying the tolerant message of Islam.
For his part, Dr. Umar expressed his pleasure to meet the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and appreciation for his great efforts in supporting the Muslim peoples, especially in Indonesia, stressing that Indonesian graduates from Al-Azhar hold the most prominent positions in the country, and are highly respected by the Indonesian people. He then added that the Indonesians’ trust in Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif and its curricula - was and still is - a motivation and encouragement for millions of Indonesians to enroll in it and to acquire knowledge through its authentic sources.
