A football fan’s frustration over a controversial VAR decision turned into a shocking criminal incident after a 40-year-old Napoli supporter was stabbed by his wife following his team’s 2-1 defeat to Atalanta in Serie A.

The match, part of the 26th round of the Italian top flight, saw SSC Napoli fall short against Atalanta BC in a tense encounter.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, tensions escalated after a penalty awarded to Napoli in the 44th minute was overturned following a VAR review.

The spot-kick had initially been given for a foul on Rasmus Højlund, shortly after Atalanta had taken the lead in the 18th minute through Sam Beukema.

The reversal reportedly triggered an angry outburst from the supporter at home, where he vented his frustration with a barrage of insults directed at the referee’s decision.

However, his wife allegedly believed the insults were aimed at her personally, leading to a heated argument.

The dispute spiraled out of control when, according to reports, the woman warned her husband to leave the house or face being stabbed. Moments later, she allegedly carried out the threat.

Emergency services responded swiftly, and the man was transported to hospital with multiple stab wounds. Medical sources confirmed that his condition is stable and not life-threatening.

During the investigation, authorities reportedly discovered three knives inside the woman’s handbag, underscoring the severity of the altercation.

Despite the defeat, Napoli remain third in the Serie A standings, five points ahead of seventh-placed Atalanta, who are preparing for an away fixture against Hellas Verona as they seek to build momentum.

The incident highlights how sporting tensions can escalate beyond the pitch, with what began as football-related frustration ending in a near-tragic domestic confrontation.
