The final-day Ligue 1 clash between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC was abandoned on Sunday after home supporters stormed the pitch at Stade de la Beaujoire amid growing anger over the club’s relegation to Ligue 2.
The match was halted after just 22 minutes when large groups of Nantes fans broke through security barriers and entered the field, forcing players and officials to rush back to the dressing rooms as chaos unfolded inside the stadium.
Videos circulating online showed flares being thrown from the stands before supporters invaded the pitch, creating dangerous scenes that left match officials with no choice but to suspend and eventually abandon the game.
The unrest came only days after Nantes confirmed relegation from Ligue 1, ending the club’s 13-year stay in France’s top flight. Emotions had already been running high among supporters ahead of the season finale, with tensions boiling over shortly after kickoff.
Security personnel attempted to regain control of the situation, but the scale of the pitch invasion made it impossible for the match to continue safely. Ligue 1 authorities are now expected to open an investigation into the incident, with potential sanctions facing the club.
The abandonment capped a disastrous end to the season for Nantes, one of France’s historic clubs, as frustration from supporters erupted following the team’s drop to the second division.
