A "mysterious" disease sweeps India and causes the death of one person, and 227 people are hospitalized in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
The patients who were transferred to the hospital suffered from symptoms including nausea and loss of consciousness.
Officials are investigating the cause of the disease, which swept through the town of Eluru, Andhra Pradesh State, at the weekend, according to the BBC.
"People who had contracted the disease, especially children, suddenly began vomiting after complaining of burning eyes, and some of them fainted or suffered from epileptic seizures," a medical official at Eluru State Hospital told the Indian Express.
The state's chief minister, Jaganmohan Reddy, said that special medical teams are being sent to Eluru to investigate the cause of the disease.
The State Minister of Health, Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas, ruled out that water pollution was the cause of the disease after blood tests were conducted for the patients.
Reddy visited the Government General Hospital (GGH) on Monday and enquired about the health condition of the patients, who were suffering from symptoms of some unknown disease.
He directed the ministers and officials to monitor the situation round-the-clock.
Hundreds of patients complained of epilepsy and dizziness-like symptoms for the last three days in Eluru town and the neighboring areas.
Reddy interacted with the patients, who were undergoing treatment at GGH.
He also spoke with the doctors treating the patients and enquired about the treatment being provided to them.
The Hindu newspaper revealed that the Chief Minister directed the officials to provide better treatment and supply medicines and nutritional diet to the discharged patients.
Reddy reviewed the situation with the Medical and Health, Revenue, and department officials.
He enquired the officers about the number of cases reported, discharged patients, referral cases, and their health condition.
He asked the doctors about the treatment being provided for the patients in the review meeting.
