Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA), signed on Tuesday 4 NGOs in Assuit and Sharqia governorates to employ youth in environmental and health awareness.

Nevine Gamea, Minister of Trade and Industry and the Executive Director of MSMEDA, Minister-Counselor and Head of EU Cooperation in Egypt, Mr. Ibrahim El Afia, and MSMEDA Deputy Director-General Engineer Tarek Shash attended the contract signing ceremony.

These contracts are expected to provide more than 70,000 daily employment opportunities (man/day).

Gamea stated that these contracts belong to "the Agreement of Addressing the Root Causes of Irregular Migration through Employability and Labor-Intensive Works" ELIW implemented by MSMEDA and funded by the European Union at 27 million Euros in 11 governorates: Luxor, Assiut, Minya, Fayoum, Qaliubia, Menoufia, Gharbia, Sharqia, Beheira, Daqahlia, and Kafr El Sheikh.

Minister of Trade and Industry and MSMEDA Executive Director added these contracts represent the kick-off stage to execute the Agreement's different components, with great emphasis on the community services component.

This component earmarks 140 million Egyptian pounds for carrying out 37 health projects, 36 environmental projects, 32 ones on kindergarten services, and 25 others on illiteracy eradication.

Gamea also pointed out that these projects altogether would create 2.6 million daily jobs (man/day) for youth between 18 and 29 years old.

Additionally, around 1.2 million inhabitants would benefit from the services to be provided, whether, on health or environmental care.

She stressed that the Agreement activities go in harmony with the Ministry of State for Migration and Egyptian Affairs Abroad where about 800 seminars on raising awareness of the risks of irregular migration and the alternative job opportunities are being held targeting 16000 citizens.

Gamea stated that this agreement aims to provide new alternatives to the youth within these migration-prone governorates through the introduction of labor-intensive community and infrastructure projects and other training programs that enable them to acquire new labor market skills or establish income-generating micro and small enterprises.

Furthermore, the minister pointed out that this agreement would help generate jobs for casual and semi-skilled labor, especially, in the field of infrastructure development projects.

Nevertheless, head of MSMEDA Human and Community Development Central Sector Engineer Medhat Massoud explained that the Agreement of Addressing the Root Causes of Irregular Migration through Employability and Labor-Intensive Works" ELIW comprises three major components that generate daily jobs for youth.

The first component is employing youth in infrastructure projects through hiring semi-skilled and unskilled labor instead of machines and equipment.

The second relates to youth employment in health, environmental awareness, illiteracy eradication, and establishing kindergartens, while the third component depends on youth training on a variety of handicrafts to qualify them for self-employment via the establishment of micro or small enterprises or develop their skills according to labor market requirements.
