Veteran manager José Mourinho, head coach of SL Benfica, has been handed a two-match suspension following his dismissal during the heated “O Clássico” encounter against rivals FC Porto in the Primeira Liga.
The disciplinary council of the Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the sanction after reviewing the incidents that occurred during Sunday’s match, which ended in a dramatic 2–2 draw.
The first part of the sanction is a one-match suspension for the red card Mourinho received in the closing minutes of the match.
The Portuguese coach was sent off after leaving the technical area and kicking the ball toward the Porto bench while celebrating a goal. Mourinho later insisted that he was merely attempting to send the ball toward the stands.
In addition, the disciplinary body imposed an extra 11-day suspension following a verbal altercation between Mourinho and Porto assistant coach Lucho González.
The suspension will begin with Benfica’s upcoming league match against FC Arouca on Saturday.
Mourinho will also miss the clash against Vitória de Guimarães, scheduled for March 21.
