More women MPs have been elected to the House of Commons than ever before, according to the Press Association news agency, breaking the previous record of 208.

A number of well-known female MPs -- including Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson, ex-Conservative rebel Anna Soubry and Labour rising star Laura Pidcock -- all lost their seats, but newly successful female candidates have more than made up for their departures. (CNN)

Attack on Niger military base leaves 71 soldiers dead

ISIS has claimed responsibility for one of the deadliest attacks on Niger's military, which left 71 soldiers dead and 12 wounded.

The attack happened on Tuesday, when several hundred heavily armed militants ambushed soldiers at an outpost in Inmates, in the west of the country near the Mali border, according to the defense minister, Issoufou Katambe( CNN).

EU Leaders To Extend Sanctions on Russia

European Union leaders meeting in Brussels on Thursday agreed to extend their main economic sanctions against Russia for six months to the end of July 2020, four diplomatic sources told Reuters.

The bloc first slapped sanctions on Moscow after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and went on to back separatists facing off against Kiev in the industrial east of the country. Its economic sanctions target Russia's energy, financial and arms sectors and are currently in place until the end of January. ( The Moscow Times)
