Hosts Morocco launched their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 campaign with a 2–0 win over Comoros in the tournament’s opening match on Sunday night at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
After a goalless first half marked by missed chances and strong resistance from Comoros, the Atlas Lions broke the deadlock in the 55th minute through Ibrahim Díaz, who finished calmly inside the penalty area following a precise through ball to score the first goal of the tournament.
Morocco doubled their advantage in the 74th minute when Ayoub El Kaabi produced a spectacular overhead kick from a well-delivered cross, sealing an impressive opening victory for the hosts.
Morocco had an early opportunity to take the lead but Sofiane Rahimi missed a penalty in the 11th minute, with Comoros goalkeeper Yannick Pandor making a fine save.
The match also saw an early setback for Morocco as captain Romain Saïss suffered an injury in the 15th minute. Although he briefly returned to the pitch, he was forced off three minutes later and replaced by Jawad El Yamiq, leaving the defender visibly distressed.
In the 41st minute, the referee consulted VAR to review a potential second penalty for Morocco but ultimately ruled out any infringement.
Despite failing to score in the first half, Morocco dominated possession and created multiple chances, only to be denied by disciplined defending and an outstanding performance from the Comoros goalkeeper.
The breakthrough after the interval reflected Morocco’s sustained pressure and attacking depth, as the hosts secured three valuable points to open Group A, which also includes Mali and Zambia.
The victory gives Morocco an early boost in their quest for continental glory, while Comoros will look to regroup ahead of their remaining group fixtures.
