Nayef Aguerd, the Moroccan international defender for Olympique de Marseille, will undergo urgent surgery on Thursday to treat a persistent groin injury, the French club confirmed in an official statement.
According to the club, the defender has been playing for several weeks while suffering from significant pain and discomfort, which eventually made it impossible for him to continue under the current condition.
“Despite conservative treatment provided by the club’s medical staff, the worsening of the injury has made surgery unavoidable,” the club said.
Following the procedure, Aguerd will begin a rehabilitation program under the supervision of Marseille’s medical team as he works toward returning to action.
The club also expressed its full support for the Moroccan defender and wished him a speedy recovery as he aims to rejoin the squad before the end of the season.
Aguerd decided to undergo surgery now to ensure he can recover in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which begins in just 93 days. The defender is expected to be a key figure for the Morocco national football team at the upcoming global tournament.
