Morocco’s U-20 national team made history by winning the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time, defeating Argentina 2-0 in the final held early Monday at the Estadio Nacional in Chile.

Young star Yasser Zuberi was the hero of the night, scoring both goals that sealed Morocco’s triumph. He opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a brilliant direct free-kick, then doubled the lead in the 29th minute, ensuring the Atlas Lions’ historic victory.

With these goals, Zuberi’s tally for the tournament rose to five, putting him atop the scoring chart alongside Benjamin Krimaski, Nicer Villarreal, and Lucas Michel.

The Atlas Lions’ victory marks the continuation of Morocco’s footballing rise over the past five years, following a fourth-place finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

This final was Morocco’s first-ever appearance in a U-20 World Cup final, making them the second Arab nation to reach the final after Qatar in 1981, and the third African nation to do so following Nigeria and Ghana.

Coach Mohamed Wahbi’s team now joins the exclusive list of U-20 World Cup winners, a history dominated by Argentina with six titles (most recently in 2007), ahead of Brazil with five.

Morocco reached the final after defeating France on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the semifinals, while Argentina secured their spot by beating Colombia 1-0, marking their eighth appearance in a U-20 World Cup final.
