The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially denied reports claiming that national team head coach Walid Regragui has submitted his resignation following Morocco’s defeat in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a statement released on Friday, the federation said that rumors circulating about Regragui stepping down are “completely unfounded,” stressing that the coach remains fully in charge of the technical staff and continues his duties according to the program set by the federation.

The clarification came after several media outlets reported that Regragui had decided to end his tenure with the Atlas Lions less than six months before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

French outlet Foot Mercato claimed that the 50-year-old coach was reluctant to continue in his role during the next phase, preferring to conclude his experience with the national team at this stage.

The report suggested that the decision followed Morocco’s loss to Senegal in the AFCON final, a match described as decisive for Regragui’s future, although no official reasons were disclosed.

According to the same report, any resignation would still depend on the position of the Moroccan federation, which holds the authority to either accept or reject it.

Until such a decision is made, Regragui would be required to continue leading the team.

Regragui has been widely praised for his achievements with Morocco, having guided the team to its first Africa Cup of Nations final since 2004, as well as to a historic semi-final appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

Morocco came agonizingly close to lifting the continental trophy, missing a late penalty in stoppage time that ultimately turned hopes of silverware into disappointment.

Despite the speculation, the federation’s statement leaves no doubt that Regragui remains Morocco’s head coach as preparations continue for upcoming international commitments.
