More than 100 flights in Japan were grounded, on Sunday, due to heavy snow in the northern and western parts of the country.

ANA Holdings had halted 77 flights as of 1 p.m. (0400 GMT), affecting around 5,100 passengers, according to Yutaka Kitahara, the company's operations director.

"As the weather situation in northeastern Japan remains unstable, there could be more cancellations to come," Kitahara said.

In like manner, Japan Airlines Co had cancelled 35 flights as of 10 a.m. (0100 GMT), affecting 1,810 passengers.

Thousands of Christmas Eve flights were canceled globally at the last minute because of the recent spike of Omicron cases.

The New York Times reported that United Airlines canceled at least 150 flights scheduled to leave dozens of airports on Friday — along with 44 more that were supposed to take off on Saturday, according to Flight Aware.

Moreover, dozens of flights were also canceled in Australia in the major cities of Sydney and Melbourne as coronavirus cases surged to their highest since the start of the pandemic.

Japan has reported only about a dozen cases of community spread of the new variant and 231 total Omicron infections, including overseas arrivals, according to the health ministry.
