Dr. Mohamed Al-Wahsh has won the position of Deputy Speaker of Egypt’s House of Representatives for the third legislative term, reflecting broad parliamentary confidence in his extensive professional, academic and public service record.

Al-Wahsh began his medical career as an assistant lecturer at Al-Zahraa University Hospital, affiliated with Al-Azhar University, after earning a bachelor’s degree in medicine from the same institution. He later completed his postgraduate studies, obtaining a master’s degree and registering his doctoral research, before receiving an overseas academic scholarship to pursue advanced specialisation in liver surgery and transplantation at the University of London.

He holds a master’s degree in general surgery from Al-Azhar University, a PhD in laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery from the University of Strasbourg, and an additional doctorate in liver surgery and transplantation from the University of London. He is recognised as the first Egyptian and Arab physician to obtain a doctorate in this highly specialised field.

Dr. Al-Wahsh later served as head of the Liver Surgery and Transplant Unit at Al-Zahraa University Hospital, where he led the first liver transplant operation conducted within Al-Azhar University hospitals. He also established three specialised liver transplant units in different hospitals, significantly expanding access to this critical medical specialty in Egypt.

Internationally, Al-Wahsh spent 11 years working at Royal Free Hospital in London, one of the world’s leading centres for liver transplantation. During this period, he participated as part of surgical teams in more than 1,500 liver transplant procedures, in addition to numerous liver tumour resection operations.

His academic contributions include more than 147 scientific papers presented at international conferences in the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, China and several Arab countries. He has also published around 40 peer-reviewed studies in international medical journals, focusing on immunology, liver diseases and the use of laser technologies in medical diagnosis and treatment.

Beyond medicine, Al-Wahsh has been active in community and public service. He organised medical convoys from England to provide healthcare services in rural areas across Egypt, delivering advanced treatment to underserved communities. He has also held several administrative roles, including medical adviser to the Tahya Misr Fund and head of the Board of Trustees Authority in New Cairo.

His election as Deputy Speaker of Parliament marks the culmination of a career that combines scientific excellence, international medical experience and public service, as Egypt’s legislature looks to benefit from his expertise, particularly in health-related and development policy discussions.
