Minister of Health Hala Zayed said on Wednesday that three tons of medical aid and a health team were dispatched to South Sudan as part of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s initiative to provide treatment for one million African people.

In March 2019, Sisi launched an initiative aimed at treating one million African nationals, an action announced at the close of the Arab-African Youth Forum in Aswan, as part of Egypt’s efforts to support African brethren in the continent.

Zayed said more than 37,000 African nationals in South Sudan, Chad, Eretria were screened during the initiative, aimed at fighting hepatitis C.

"The Egyptian health team continues to examine patients in South Sudan, Chad, and Eretria, as well as give training to medical cadres to acquire the Egyptian experience in eliminating hepatitis C, detecting non-communicable diseases, and treatment protocols," Zayed said.

"Up to 1,000 South Sudan citizens were screened in the first week of the medical team’s work," the minister said, adding that the medical examinations will continue till the end of December.
