Oscar Winner, ‘Sound of Music’ Star Christopher Plummer Dies at 91

Veteran Christopher Plummer, a distinguished Canadian actor best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in ‘The Sound of Music’, died at the age of 91, his longtime friend and manager said on Friday.

Plummer died peacefully at his home in Connecticut with his wife Elaine Taylor at his side, according to reports. His long-time friend and manager Lou Pitt called him "an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession."

"He was a national treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots," Pitt said. "Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come.”

On his part, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau paid a heartfelt tribute to Plummer in a statement on Twitter, sending his deepest condolences to his family and friends, affirming that “his work will continue to inspire and entertain us all for years to come.”

Plummer’s "Sound of Music" co-star Julie Andrews conveyed her deepest condolences to his wife, Elaine, and his daughter, Amanda, stressing that she treasures the memories of their work together and all the humor and fun they shared through the years.

Knives Out” star Chris Evans recalled his moments with Plummer on the set, calling him “a lovely man and a legendary talent."

His fellow Oscar-winner Helen Mirren said of him, “I had the great honour to work with Chris Plummer in his Oscar nominated role of Tolstoy. He was a mighty force both as Man and Actor.”

Mirren hailed the star’s commitment to his profession, noting that his "art was total, theater being a constant and the most important part of the totality of his drive to engage with storytelling."

In addition to “The Sound of Music,” his credits included A Beautiful Mind, 12 Monkeys, Malcolm X and Knives Out, among numerous others.

The actor went on to earn Academy Award nominations for "The Last Station" and "All the Money in the World," as well as winning the Oscar in 2012 for "Beginners."

Moreover; he earned a Tony Awards for his portrayal of Cyrano de Bergerac in the musical Cyrano in 1974. He also played John Barrymore in Barrymore in 1977, for which he won another Tony.

The Canadian actor was also active on stage, appearing on Broadway, the National Theater and The Royal Shakespeare Company in England.
