Ahmed Hossam "Mido" former coach of the Saudi team Al-Wahda, sent a letter to the International Federation of Football (FIFA) in and the European Union, requesting both organisations to stop players observing fasting from playing football matches, to avoid on-field deaths.

"I hope players will be stopped from playing during their fasting period, due to the physical intensity of the game at this level," he tweeted on his official page at the social networking site Twitter.

"I know that I will be attacked harshly because of what I am saying. I am a Muslim. But players between the ages of 18 and 19 can not be allowed to fast and run for 12 or 13 kilometres as their bodies can not store food or liquids for up to 18 hours." "Please act before anyone dies," he said.

Mido's statements came after Ajax coach urged team members to not fast during yesterday's match against Tottenham. "It can be a great deal of irresponsibility and recklessness to have Ramadan fasting observed at this time of the season," said Ajax coach Ayman Rasmussen Verheijen.
