Mexico has decided to end the school year nearly six weeks earlier than planned as the country prepares to host matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup while facing unusually high summer temperatures.

The Ministry of Education confirmed that classes will now end on June 5 instead of mid-July, with students expected to return on August 31.

Officials said the move is aimed at protecting students during the ongoing heat wave and easing pressure on cities preparing for the tournament.

Mexico will co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside the United States and Canada, with 13 matches scheduled across Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.

The tournament opens on June 11, when Mexico faces South Africa at the historic Azteca Stadium.

Education Minister Mario Delgado said student safety was a key factor behind the decision, especially after several regions recorded unusually high temperatures in recent months.

According to recent weather forecast data, the city of Hermosillo reached 42 degrees Celsius in March, marking one of the hottest early spring temperatures in the country’s recent history. Weather experts expect the extreme heat to continue throughout June and July.

Authorities also said the revised calendar would help schools prepare for the new academic year while allowing the country to manage the logistical demands linked to hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
