Mexico presented a dominant performance as they defeated Serbia 5–1 in a friendly match early Friday morning, as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The match, played ahead of the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, saw Mexico take control with a strong attacking display throughout the game.
Goals for Mexico came from John Vásquez, a Serbian own goal, Raúl Jiménez, another own goal by the opposition, and Luis Chávez, scoring in the 34th, 45th, 57th, 72nd, and 90th minutes.
Serbia managed to score a consolation goal through Petar Stanić in the 19th minute, but they were ultimately overwhelmed by Mexico’s intensity and finishing.
The result is a major confidence boost for Mexico as they prepare for the opening of the World Cup. They will begin their campaign on June 11 at Estadio Azteca against South Africa in Group A, followed by matches against South Korea and the Czech Republic.
Mexico enter the tournament with a strong historical record, having reached the Round of 16 in seven consecutive World Cups between 1994 and 2018, and will be aiming to build on that consistency in 2026.
